The average prices of petrol and diesel in Nigeria have climbed by more than 86 per cent since the beginning of 2026, with both products recording their highest average prices of the year by late September.
A fuel price trend report by Priceandpromo showed that the average price of petrol reached N1,378 per litre on September 22, up from the January 13 base price.
Diesel, also known as Automotive Gas Oil, rose even higher to an average of N1,899 per litre during the same period.
Based on the report, petrol recorded an 80.8 per cent increase between January 13 and September 22, while diesel surged by 91.8 per cent.
The figures put the combined average increase for the two major petroleum products at 86.3 per cent.
The report attributed the latest price movement to renewed volatility in the international energy market, noting that changes in global energy costs continue to affect Nigeria’s domestic fuel market.
Fuel prices had experienced a sharp increase in March before remaining relatively stable at elevated levels between April and July. However, prices began climbing again in August and continued their upward movement into September.
The latest increase has raised concerns about its potential effect on transportation and logistics, as petrol and diesel remain essential to the movement of people, goods and services across the country.
Higher diesel costs could also increase operating expenses for businesses that depend on diesel-powered generators and equipment, while rising petrol prices could put additional pressure on transport costs.
The report noted that the faster increase in diesel prices compared with petrol was particularly significant, with AGO recording a 91.8 per cent rise against the 80.8 per cent increase recorded for PMS.
