Former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mr. Mele Kyari, says he is ready to give a full account of his stewardship as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensifies its investigation into alleged financial misconduct by top officials of the national oil company.
Kyari, who was removed from his position on April 2, 2025, by President Bola Tinubu, dismissed reports claiming he is in EFCC custody, describing them as false and malicious.
“I served not only my country but also God. I am happy to account for my stewardship,” Kyari stated in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. “This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, which only they know.”
According to him, since his removal, he has been “taking a well-deserved rest” and is ready to cooperate with authorities whenever called upon.EFCC investigations have reportedly extended to over a dozen former NNPC officials, including ex-Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajiya and past refinery heads across Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna.
The probe focuses on allegations of abuse of office and mismanagement of funds, particularly around the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, which reportedly cost nearly $3 billion.
Kyari emphasized his dedication to public service, saying, “I served with the fear of God, knowing fully well as a Muslim that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah.”
He urged the media to refrain from spreading unverified reports, warning that disinformation could damage investor confidence and harm the nation’s image.“Such disinformation does not serve anyone’s purpose, including the NNPC and the country,” he added.
“It sends the wrong signal to investors and the international community.”The EFCC has requested information on numerous officials involved in key roles within NNPC operations.
Sources say the government is under pressure to prosecute those found guilty of financial infractions.
