Nigeria is actively seeking Ghana’s backing for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project, a major initiative designed to strengthen regional ties and enhance energy security.
The discussions took place during the West African Gas Pipeline Committee’s ministerial meeting in Accra, Ghana, where Nigeria also addressed an outstanding $75 million debt owed by Ghana for gas supplied through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekpo Ekperipe, confirmed the debt issue was discussed during his meeting with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. Ekperipe stressed the urgency for Ghanaian authorities to facilitate the repayment under the existing pipeline agreement.
The West African Gas Pipeline, which spans 678 kilometers, transports natural gas from Nigeria’s Niger Delta to Benin, Togo, and Ghana. The pipeline is jointly operated by Chevron, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and national gas companies from participating countries.
The conversation also revolved around Ghana’s support for the proposed $25 billion African Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project, a critical energy infrastructure project that aims to enhance regional energy security.
The pipeline, expected to span at least 13 African countries, has the potential to extend to Europe. In a statement, Ekperipe emphasized, “Nigeria is committed to working together with Ghana to resolve any outstanding issues related to the WAGP and to further the success of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline Project.
“In response, President Mahama acknowledged Ghana’s obligations and reiterated the nation’s commitment to settling its debts. “We are dedicated to meeting our financial responsibilities and ensuring regional stability through this vital gas infrastructure,” Mahama said.
The proposed pipeline, which is part of a broader African energy strategy, is seen as a crucial step toward bolstering the region’s energy security while fostering economic growth.
As negotiations continue, both nations are focusing on ensuring the success of the project and addressing the challenges that come with regional gas supply agreements.
