LECAN Storms Osogbo Streets, Demands Reform Over IBEDC Exploitation

The Licensed Electrical Contractors of Nigeria (LECAN), Osun State Chapter, took to the streets on Thursday to protest against the alleged exploitation and harassment by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The group accused IBEDC workers of unlawfully taking over roles meant for licensed contractors, causing inhumane treatment of residents and demanding urgent reforms.

Carrying placards with slogans like “Enough of IBEDC exploitation” and “Band System is A Fraud,” the protesters called for an end to what they described as IBEDC’s continuous abuse of power.Prophet Michael Adebayo, representing LECAN, said, “IBEDC workers have usurped the responsibility of licensed contractors only to turn into tormentors who wickedly exploit the residents/customers.”

He stressed that the Electricity Act of 2013 clearly defines the roles of DISCOs, licensed contractors, and consumers, and IBEDC’s actions violate this law.

Adebayo further condemned the high fees charged to new customers, saying, “Those given new accounts were usually charged a debit minimum of N100,000 even before joining the grid,” calling it a fraudulent practice.

He also raised concerns about IBEDC’s refusal to return meter upgrade cards, calling it illegal. In response, IBEDC spokesperson Kikelomo Owoeye reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance, urging customers to raise any concerns through official channels.

The protest highlights ongoing tensions between IBEDC and licensed contractors as residents continue to face difficulties accessing reliable electricity services in the region.
