In a landmark move to boost energy accessibility in Northern Nigeria, the Federal Government has inaugurated the first-ever Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) facility in the North-East region.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, commissioned the project on Tuesday in Yola, Adamawa State, describing it as a “beacon of hope and opportunity” that signals Nigeria’s commitment to cleaner, cheaper energy alternatives.
“This facility in Yola marks a significant turning point. It is a beacon of hope and opportunity, not only for Adamawa State but for the entire region,” Ekpo said in a statement released by his spokesman, Louis Ibah. “It demonstrates that the benefits of Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources can and must reach every corner of our country.”
Built by Greenville LNG, the hub integrates Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to power vehicles and industrial equipment. Ekpo said the LCNG model offers a “perfect example” of innovation driving Nigeria’s ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda.
“By leveraging advanced technology and innovative models like this LCNG facility, we are setting a new benchmark for energy accessibility and sustainability,” he said. “This LCNG facility is not only delivering energy but also delivering hope, creating jobs, enabling businesses, and fostering peace through inclusive development.”
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, represented by Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta, lauded the project, aligning it with the state’s vision for cleaner and more affordable energy.
“We will need more of the federal government’s intervention, and we will do our best to ensure that the project succeeds,” she stated.
Eddy Broeke, Chairman of Greenville, revealed that the company is investing over $1 billion in Nigeria’s gas infrastructure and plans to replicate similar projects across other states. He urged the government to continue supporting these initiatives.
The project is seen as a strong example of public-private collaboration and a crucial step toward industrialization, economic transformation, and environmental protection in the region.
