The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has announced plans to begin construction of multiple renewable energy production facilities at Abuja Technology Village (ATV), marking a significant step toward boosting Nigeria’s clean energy and local manufacturing capabilities.
The agency’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Halilu, revealed the development during a joint briefing with officials from ATV earlier this week. According to Halilu, construction work is expected to kick off next week, with visible progress anticipated within six months.
“We aim to move fast. Our target is to start immediately and replicate the speed of our past projects, where we’ve delivered factories in less than four months,” he said.
The new facilities will focus on the production of key renewable technologies, including batteries, solar panels, and electric vehicles. Halilu emphasized that affordability is a priority, noting that the factories must produce items that are accessible to the average Nigerian.
Beyond manufacturing, NASENI also intends to foster a vibrant work-life community within the technology park, complete with housing and recreational infrastructure to support innovation-driven talent.
Highlighting a shift in NASENI’s focus, Halilu noted the agency’s determination to move beyond research and development into full-scale production. “We want our R&D efforts to lead directly to practical solutions, not just remain as prototypes on a shelf,” he said.
Yusuf Isa, the Acting Managing Director of ATV, welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a much-needed boost for Nigeria’s local production ambitions. He stressed that the project aligns with ATV’s mission as a Special Economic Zone built to encourage high-tech business and innovation.
Established in 2009, Abuja Technology Village is one of Nigeria’s premier science and technology parks, offering an ecosystem designed to nurture advanced industries and create sustainable job opportunities.
The NASENI-ATV partnership is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward homegrown, clean energy solutions while creating jobs and strengthening the nation’s industrial base.
