NNPC Donates 35 CNG Buses to Support Cleaner, Cheaper Transport in Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has donated 35 hybrid buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to the Presidential Initiative on CNG (Pi-CNG) as part of efforts to promote more affordable and eco-friendly transportation.

At a ceremony held at the NNPC headquarters in Abuja, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, said the donation reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the government’s clean energy goals. He noted that NNPC has made meaningful progress in developing gas infrastructure and promoting CNG as a cost-effective and sustainable fuel option.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the CNG buses as symbols of economic relief and environmental progress. He emphasized their role in helping ordinary Nigerians access safe, affordable, and efficient transport while reducing dependence on petrol.

The minister also said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by easing transportation costs and making better use of Nigeria’s gas reserves.

Mumuni Dagazau, NNPC’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, highlighted the economic benefits of switching to CNG, such as lowering fuel import costs and boosting the domestic gas sector. His counterpart in Gas, Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, said NNPC remains committed to leading the push for CNG adoption.

The Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, called the initiative a major step toward building a future energy system that serves both people and the environment.

Michael Oluwagbemi, who leads the Presidential CNG Initiative, thanked NNPC for its consistent support and described the company as a dependable partner in driving the programme forward.
