The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of six individuals in connection with the theft and vandalism of solar-powered streetlights in the state.
The suspects were apprehended with stolen solar panels and cutting tools used to dismantle the infrastructure, which was installed by both the state government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The stolen components are believed to have been sold for profit.
Police authorities said the arrests follow a recent rise in the destruction of public solar lights, especially along isolated areas like Elebele-AIT Road and other quiet parts of Yenagoa.
Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, described the act as sabotage, warning that public infrastructure meant for the benefit of residents must not be destroyed. He added that the suspects are currently assisting with investigations to trace those involved in the sale of the stolen items.
To tackle the issue, the state government has supported the police with a high-powered surveillance drone for day and night monitoring of key areas.
Idu also called for a review of the policy restricting the public parade of suspects, stating that those arrested with clear evidence should be presented publicly to discourage others from engaging in similar crimes.
The police say they are committed to curbing vandalism and protecting infrastructure across the state.
