Nigeria Targets 10bn SCF Daily Gas Output by 2030

The Federal Government has restated its resolve to scale up natural gas production to 10 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) per day by the year 2030, a move officials say is crucial for strengthening the country’s energy sector and attracting global investment.

The assurance came from Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, during a meeting with the leadership of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in Abuja on Thursday.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Mohammed Manga, discussions centered on policy reforms, investment opportunities, and infrastructure projects that will define Nigeria’s future in gas. Edun noted that recent agreements, including a landmark deepwater partnership with TotalEnergies, highlight the administration’s drive to build a stable and competitive operating environment.

“The president has worked to stabilize the economy and open new doors in both the industrial and energy space,” Edun said, stressing that ongoing tax and trade reforms would make Nigeria more attractive to investors. He added that digital systems are being introduced to cut inefficiencies and enhance transparency across the sector.

NLNG’s Managing Director, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, briefed the minister on company operations, pointing to increased gas supply, improved security along the Trans-Niger pipeline, and higher plant utilization, now above 70 percent. He also flagged progress on key infrastructure such as the Bodo-Bonny Road, while urging government support for extending the East-West highway under the tax credit framework.

Officials described the meeting as a turning point in aligning government policies with private sector efforts to expand Nigeria’s energy output. With renewed political will, expanding infrastructure, and stronger investor engagement, Nigeria is positioning itself to unlock its gas potential in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
