Tinubu Moves to Revive Oil Production in Ogoniland

President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to restart oil production in Ogoniland, Rivers State, as part of efforts to foster reconciliation and unlock economic opportunities in the region.

The president revealed the initiative on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he posthumously awarded national honours to the late “Ogoni Four” — Albert Badey, Edward Kobani, Theophilus Orage, and Samuel Orage — conferring on them the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Tinubu said the decision to resume operations in the oil-rich but conflict-scarred area reflects the readiness of Ogoni communities to pursue peace after decades of tension. He pledged that his administration would prioritize environmental restoration, economic revival, and inclusive participation for the people.

“I am inspired by the consensus among Ogoni leaders to support the return of oil production. My government will channel every resource to ensure this region enjoys peace and shared prosperity,” the president said.

To advance the process, Tinubu instructed National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu to work with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), community leaders, and other stakeholders to finalize frameworks for restarting oil production.

Presenting his report earlier, Ribadu explained that consultations were held across all four Ogoni zones as well as with representatives in the diaspora. He noted that key concerns raised included structured community involvement in oil production, speeding up the environmental cleanup, and ensuring sustainable development in the area.

The announcement marks a new phase in government efforts to rebuild trust in Ogoniland, decades after unrest and environmental degradation halted oil exploration.
