$25B Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Takes Off with New Project Company

The ambitious $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) has reached a significant milestone with the formation of a dedicated Project Company, signaling progress toward full-scale construction.

The new entity is tasked with managing the project’s assets, centralizing responsibilities, and establishing a clear framework for financing and governance. Experts note that such a structure boosts transparency and reassures potential investors, particularly for a project of this scale.

Several international financiers, including the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), are supporting the initiative, underscoring its global investment appeal. The pipeline is planned to span over 6,000 kilometers, transporting up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Nigeria through a dozen West African countries to Morocco and ultimately Europe.

For Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer and holder of the continent’s biggest gas reserves, the pipeline is part of a strategy to diversify energy exports beyond the region. Morocco and the transit countries are expected to gain improved access to natural gas while strengthening their positions in the global energy market.

The project is now entering a critical phase, with the final investment decision (FID) anticipated by the end of 2025. Analysts say this decision will be decisive in determining the feasibility and financing of the massive infrastructure. Support from multilateral financial institutions has already helped validate the project’s economic potential, making it one of Africa’s most closely watched energy developments.
