Shell Pushes for IOC-Indigenous Synergy to Unlock Nigeria’s Gas Future

Shell has urged stronger collaboration between international oil companies (IOCs) and Nigerian-owned firms to drive gas production and establish the resource as a pillar of the nation’s industrial growth.

Speaking at the 3rd Gas Investment Forum in Lagos, General Manager of Shell Energy Nigeria, Markus Hector — represented by the company’s Head of Portfolio, Regulation and Supply, Chuka Amos-Ejesi — said joint partnerships are key to unlocking Nigeria’s abundant gas potential.

According to him, IOCs bring the advantage of technical know-how, global expertise, and access to large capital, while local companies contribute valuable market insights and operational agility suited to Nigeria’s environment.

“Collaboration should not only boost production but also help build local capacity in engineering, supply chain management, and operations,” Hector said.

Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG), Ralph Gbobo, said the company is deepening its investment in gas infrastructure to power industries and communities across the country.

“SNG is developing gas hubs in Port Harcourt, Aba, Ota, and more recently, Yenagoa, with plans to expand to other cities,” Gbobo explained. He described infrastructure as the backbone of Nigeria’s gas industrialisation, adding that it will lower costs, reduce emissions, and make gas more accessible.

Gbobo further stressed that stable and consistent government policies are essential for attracting long-term investments. “Policy clarity encourages investor confidence, while collaboration drives scale, innovation, and sustainability,” he added.

Shell reiterated that natural gas remains central to Nigeria’s energy transition, offering reliable power, supporting job creation, and driving economic diversification. The company maintained that progress in the sector will depend on strong partnerships between the government, IOCs, and indigenous operators to build a sustainable energy future.
