In a major push for clean energy, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has announced plans to build Nigeria’s first 8MW floating solar PV plant to power Lagos State University (LASU).
The landmark project was unveiled during the Lagos State Energy Summit on April 14 at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, and forms part of a broader agreement between the REA and the Lagos State Government to deploy rooftop solar systems across public institutions.
“This collaboration with REA will help bridge the energy distribution gap,” said Lagos Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
REA’s CEO, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, highlighted additional initiatives including a $150 million Lithium Battery Assembly Plant at Lekki and a proposed Renewable Energy University to boost local talent.
The deal supports REA’s broader programs like the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative and the World Bank-backed DARES project, targeting widespread adoption of renewable energy.
“Our goal is to replace over four million diesel generators in Lagos with sustainable power,” Aliyu noted.
The move aligns with the 2023 Electricity Act, aiming to deepen access to power across Nigerian states.
