China Discovers 225 New Oil and Gas Fields, Boosts Energy Output

China says it has strengthened its energy base after identifying 225 large and medium-sized crude oil and natural gas fields between 2021 and 2025, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Officials explained that the discoveries include 13 oil fields with reserves above 100 million tons and 26 gas fields holding over 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The development is part of a national drive under the 14th Five-Year Plan to improve energy security through expanded exploration.

The government invested about 450 billion yuan ($65.8 billion) during the period to support oil and gas exploration, which has led to a significant rise in confirmed reserves.

Compared to the previous five-year cycle, crude oil reserves increased by more than 50 percent, while natural gas reserves rose by over 40 percent.

Unconventional energy sources also recorded strong growth, with shale oil and coal-bed methane contributing heavily to new supply. Deep coal-bed methane reserves alone exceeded 1 trillion cubic meters.

By 2025, China’s crude oil production reached a record 216 million tons, while natural gas output climbed above 260 billion cubic meters, extending a long-term growth trend. Shale oil and gas production also increased, adding to overall supply stability.

Total oil and gas output rose to about 420 million tons of oil equivalent in 2025. Offshore production also expanded, supported by deep-water projects like “Deep Sea No. 1,” helping China push further into advanced exploration zones.

Officials said the progress reflects a broader strategy to improve domestic energy self-sufficiency and maintain stable growth in both oil and gas production.
