Adelabu Denies Resignation Rumours

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed reports claiming he resigned from office, describing the information as false and misleading.

The clarification follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructing political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

In a message shared with journalists, Adelabu’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, stated that the minister remains in office and fully focused on his responsibilities. He also shared images of a supposed resignation letter marked “fake news” to counter the circulating claims.

The rumours gained attention after Adelabu, during a recent press briefing in Abuja, acknowledged the timeline for political decisions ahead of the elections but did not confirm whether he would resign.

He explained that his priority remains addressing Nigeria’s electricity supply challenges and delivering results in the power sector. According to him, any political decision will be made known at the appropriate time.

The directive requiring appointees with political ambitions to resign was issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in line with electoral regulations and the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.

Adelabu has been linked to possible interest in the Oyo State governorship race, although no official declaration has been made. Despite the speculation, he insists that reports of his resignation are unfounded and that his focus remains on his ministerial duties.
