At the recently concluded World Gas Conference (WGC) in Beijing, China, the International Gas Union (IGU) officially appointed Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), as the Regional Coordinator for Africa. The prestigious role marks a major milestone for Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s energy space.
The IGU’s decision acknowledges Mr. Nwokedi’s strategic leadership and the NGA’s significant contributions to promoting natural gas as a driver of energy security and economic growth across Africa.
In his new capacity, Mr. Nwokedi will serve as the primary liaison between the IGU and African member countries. His responsibilities include championing policies for natural gas development, promoting regional cooperation, facilitating knowledge sharing, and shaping global strategies with African insights.
“The appointment represents both an honour and a profound responsibility,” said Mr. Nwokedi. “It acknowledges Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s gas sector while providing an important platform to advocate for sustainable energy solutions that will drive economic development across our continent.”
He takes over from Eng. Khaled AbuBakr of Egypt, who now serves as Vice-President of the IGU for the 2028–2031 term, a shift that signals Africa’s rising influence in global energy leadership.
The IGU described the Regional Coordinator Africa role as critical to enhancing access to gas infrastructure, fostering sustainability, and boosting regional energy integration.
“Mr. Nwokedi’s appointment underscores Nigeria’s central role in shaping Africa’s energy future,” the IGU noted.
The Nigerian Gas Association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the sustainable development of Nigeria’s gas sector as a tool for regional economic progress. As the umbrella body for both public and private gas sector stakeholders, the NGA continues to push for an enabling environment for optimal utilisation of Nigeria’s vast gas resources.
