The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed a viral online video claiming it is behind a new service that delivers petrol to motorists using motorcycle dispatch riders.
The video, which trended on Sunday, shows a man allegedly bypassing fuel queues by ordering petrol through WhatsApp. A rider then arrives with a small dispensing unit attached to his bike and fills the man’s vehicle. The advert labels the service “FuelUp” and suggests it is powered by “Dangote Petroleum.”
However, officials of the refinery say the footage is entirely false.
The Group Chief Communication Officer, Anthony Chiejina, told The Punch that the company has no connection to the video and has not authorised any such initiative. He described the content as “fake” and warned the public against assuming it originated from the refinery.
Another official explained that Dangote currently distributes fuel only to bulk buyers and has not entered into any agreement with any company to supply petrol through dispatch riders.
While the video sparked interest from some Nigerians who saw the concept as convenient, others raised concerns about the safety implications of transporting fuel on motorcycles. Some viewers also speculated that the advert may have been created using AI.
The clarification comes as the refinery continues expanding its operations. In recent months, Dangote imported hundreds of Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks to strengthen its distribution network. The refinery also began direct fuel distribution in September and is working on increasing its production capacity from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day.
Located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the facility is one of the world’s largest integrated refineries. Company sources say ongoing investments in cleaner energy, automation, and improved logistics aim to boost domestic fuel supply and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the regional energy market.
The planned expansion is expected to significantly increase local availability of refined products and reinforce the refinery’s long-term sustainability plans.
