Italian PM Visits Algeria in Search of More Gas Supplies

Italy is looking to strengthen its energy supply as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visits Algeria for talks centered on increasing gas deliveries and deepening cooperation.

The visit comes at a time when global energy markets are under pressure. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have disrupted liquefied natural gas exports, particularly from Qatar, pushing countries like Italy to seek alternative and more stable sources.

Algeria already plays a key role in Italy’s energy mix, supplying about 30 percent of its gas needs. Both countries are connected through the Transmed pipeline, which allows direct gas flow from North Africa to Europe.

During the talks, Italy is expected to push for increased volumes and possibly better pricing. However, Algeria may be reluctant to offer discounts due to rising global demand and supply concerns linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Italy is reportedly offering investment opportunities in exchange for stronger energy cooperation, aiming to secure long-term supply stability.

Despite the existing infrastructure, Algeria may need to expand its production capacity to meet growing international demand, which could shape the outcome of the discussions.
