Lagos State has installed a solar power system at Radio Lagos and Eko FM to reduce reliance on diesel generators and the national grid, ensuring uninterrupted broadcasting.
The 150KVA outdoor solar system, provided by Alternatio Navitas Limited, was unveiled by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye.
Olajide Lawal, General Manager of Radio Lagos and Eko FM, said the project marks a major improvement for the stations, which have long faced unreliable power supply. He emphasized that the solar installation ensures continuous service while lowering operating costs.
“This solar project goes beyond technology, it reflects our commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and delivering uninterrupted service to listeners,” Lawal said.
The system features 720-watt solar panels generating a total of 350 kilowatts, tailored to meet the stations’ energy needs. Tayo Ogidan, CEO of Alternatio Navitas, explained that the installation addresses Nigeria’s broader electricity supply challenges and provides a sustainable power solution for the stations.
Commissioner Ogunleye encouraged the stations to manage savings from reduced diesel use wisely, while Omotoso noted that the switch to solar is part of Lagos State’s broader transition to renewable energy.
The move is expected to reduce operational costs, minimize carbon emissions, and serve as a model for renewable energy adoption across the state.
