Nigeria Moves to Roll Out 500 New CNG Stations in Three Years

The Federal Government is set to expand Nigeria’s compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure with the planned rollout of 500 new refuelling stations across the country within the next three years.

The initiative follows advanced discussions between the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) and Chinese equipment manufacturer Endurance Group. According to MDGIF Executive Director Oluwole Adama, the project aims to ease the heavy pressure on the nation’s current CNG outlets, which often experience long queues due to limited capacity.

Adama explained that the plan involves establishing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) with participation from MDGIF, the Bank of Industry, Endurance Group and Séquor Investment Partners. The new entity—named Compressed Natural Gas Auto Mobility Infrastructure Company (CAM InfraCo)—will oversee the development and deployment of the nationwide network.

CAM InfraCo will build integrated CNG refuelling stations, expand liquefied-to-compressed natural gas (LCNG) supply systems, and provide transportation solutions using trucks fitted with gas storage systems. This “virtual pipeline” model is expected to strengthen supply across all states and deliver CNG to areas currently lacking access.

Adama noted that the expanded network will improve distribution efficiency and reduce congestion at existing stations by creating more refuelling options for motorists and gas-powered fleets.

Presidential adviser on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs, Oluwatoyin Subair, welcomed the development, describing it as aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s broader clean-energy transition plan. He said the project would help reduce reliance on petrol and diesel—especially in the transport sector—while supporting government efforts to boost energy security and promote cheaper, cleaner alternatives.

Endurance Group CEO Eric Lin added that the partnership aims to create a full-service national CNG ecosystem. Through CAM InfraCo, the company plans to lease equipment to certified operators and ensure steady gas supply through a modern logistics system anchored by strategically located “mother stations.”

The nationwide rollout is expected to stimulate job creation and support Nigeria’s wider economic reforms, while strengthening the domestic gas value chain and expanding access to affordable fuel options.
