Seplat Energy Rehabilitates Oil Wells, Adds 33,000 BPD to Nigerian Output

Seplat Energy Plc has successfully restored 33 oil wells, with 26 of them now producing a combined 33,000 barrels of oil per day, the company announced at the 43rd Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) conference in Lagos.

Samson Ezugworie, Seplat’s Chief Operating Officer, said the rehabilitation effort is part of the company’s strategy to close Nigeria’s production gap and strengthen the nation’s energy security. The initiative follows Seplat’s recent offshore asset acquisition, positioning the company to make a more significant contribution to national output targets.

“This milestone is a key step toward addressing the shortfall in production that affects government revenue and energy supply,” Ezugworie stated. He added that Seplat plans to continue rehabilitating idle wells through a low-cost approach, aiming to further increase production.

Highlighting the broader energy challenges, Ezugworie noted that over 70 million Nigerians still lack electricity access, and more than 170 million rely on biomass for cooking, which has environmental and health impacts. With Nigeria’s population projected to reach 237 million by 2025, he stressed the urgency of scaling up domestic energy production to meet future demand.

Beyond oil, Seplat is expanding its gas initiatives. The company is nearing first gas production from the ANOH Gas Processing Plant and has begun delivering LPG from its upgraded Sapele gas facility. These efforts are expected to reduce routine flaring, lower emissions, and provide cleaner, more reliable energy to households and industries.

Ezugworie emphasized that Seplat’s growth is guided by three principles: leadership, partnership, and stewardship, and that these values are central to building a locally owned and managed energy industry in Nigeria.

“Through these initiatives, we are not just producing energy; we are driving development, creating jobs, and contributing to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity,” he said.
