Tanzania President Orders Officials to Travel by Bus to Cut Fuel Use

Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed government officials to commute together in a single bus during official trips as Tanzania responds to rising fuel prices and supply pressure linked to Middle East tensions.

The instruction was announced during a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, where the president said the government must lead by example in conserving fuel.

Under the new arrangement, only a reduced presidential convoy – limited to essential security, police escorts and a backup vehicle will accompany her. Other officials who usually travel in a long line of SUVs and support vehicles will now move together by bus.

Fuel prices in the country have climbed by about one-third since March, according to the national energy regulator, prompting authorities to consider practical steps to reduce consumption.

The situation has been worsened by disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.

Similar conservation efforts are being seen across the region. In Ethiopia, the government recently prioritised fuel access for vehicles carrying essential goods and for public transport operators as supplies tighten.
