Portland Gas Opens New CNG Station in Lagos

Portland Gas Limited has commissioned a new compressed natural gas (CNG) station in Lagos as part of efforts to expand access to cleaner and more affordable energy across Nigeria.

The facility, located in Ojota, has a storage capacity of 96,000 standard cubic metres (SCM) and was developed in partnership with the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF). The company said the station is expected to improve the availability of CNG and reduce waiting times for customers.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Portland Gas, Folajimi Mohammed, disclosed that the company is also planning to build a larger station with a capacity of five million standard cubic feet per day as it expands its operations.

He explained that the new station currently receives gas through a virtual pipeline system, where gas is transported from a third-party mother station. However, plans are underway to connect the facility directly to the Axxela Gaslink pipeline network, which would enable the company to supply gas to its daughter stations and other customers.

Mohammed said expanding gas infrastructure remains essential to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition agenda. He noted that Portland Gas has already commissioned stations in Ojota and Kubwa, operates a smaller facility in Utako, and is developing another station in Gwagwalada.

According to him, the company has invested about $4 million in its Lagos and Abuja projects, with additional facilities, including a mother station and a liquefied compressed natural gas (LCNG) station in Gwagwalada, expected to commence operations in the coming months.

He also called for greater private-sector participation in the gas sector, describing natural gas as a key driver of Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

Mohammed commended MDGIF for supporting gas infrastructure development, adding that while the funding process is thorough and necessary, there is room for improvements that could make it easier for credible operators to access financing.

The company said continued investment in CNG infrastructure will help increase energy access, encourage cleaner fuel adoption, and support the Federal Government’s drive to expand gas utilisation nationwide.
