Azerbaijan to Increase Gas Production, Expand Energy Exports

Azerbaijan says it plans to boost its natural gas production in the coming years as part of efforts to strengthen its role as a steady energy supplier to regional and international markets.

The announcement was made at the Baku Energy Forum by the president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), Rovshan Najaf, who reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring reliable and sustainable gas deliveries.

He said Azerbaijan will continue prioritising stable supply to existing customers while also expanding its export reach. Key markets currently include Europe, Türkiye, and Georgia, while Syria has recently been added as a new destination for Azerbaijani gas exports.

Najaf noted that demand for additional gas volumes is growing, but stressed that reliability and long-term planning are just as important as production increases. He said sustained investment and strong partnerships are needed to support future expansion.

A major focus of the country’s strategy is the development and expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor, which transports gas from Azerbaijan to European markets. Officials say they are prepared to increase supply through the corridor, but are calling on European partners to commit to long-term purchase agreements and support infrastructure funding.

He also pointed to ongoing and upcoming upstream projects, including continued production at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field, as well as new offshore developments expected to boost output in the coming years.

According to him, these projects will help meet domestic energy needs while increasing the volume available for export, further strengthening Azerbaijan’s position in the global energy market.
