FG Convenes Emergency Meeting Over Rising Cooking Gas Prices

The Federal Government has convened an emergency stakeholders’ meeting to address the continued rise in cooking gas prices and identify measures to improve supply and affordability across the country.

The meeting brought together regulators, producers, marketers, terminal operators and industry associations to assess the factors driving the increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices and develop solutions to stabilise the market.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Patience Oyekunle, described LPG as an essential source of energy for households and a key component of Nigeria’s energy transition strategy. She noted that higher cooking gas prices were increasing the financial burden on families and contributing to the rising cost of living.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said President Bola Tinubu had expressed concern over the impact of the price increases on Nigerians and directed relevant agencies to take steps to address the situation.

According to him, efforts to boost LPG supply must be supported by efficient logistics, improved infrastructure and transparent pricing systems to ensure consumers benefit from industry-wide interventions.

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, , attributed the current price pressure partly to high landing costs. He said the authority was working with producers and other stakeholders to increase domestic supply, strengthen market oversight and improve product availability.

Umar expressed optimism that ongoing initiatives across the LPG value chain would help ease market pressures and support price stability in the coming weeks.
