Iraqi authorities have arrested Deputy Oil Minister after investigators discovered about $14 million in cash and other assets during a raid on his home in Baghdad.
The Supreme Judicial Council said officials seized $11 million, 4 billion Iraqi dinars (about $3 million), and several properties following initial investigations. State media released images showing security personnel removing bags of cash hidden inside the walls of the residence.
Al-Bahadly was detained early Sunday as part of Iraq’s expanding anti-corruption campaign. The official was sanctioned by the in May over allegations that he helped Iran-linked networks smuggle oil by falsifying certificates of origin and disguising Iranian crude as Iraqi exports. He has also been accused of providing financial support to sanctioned individuals and groups.
A former Oil Ministry official said corruption within the sector involves powerful political interests that have long protected officials from accountability.
The arrest is one of several recent actions under Iraq’s anti-corruption drive, which has also targeted senior government officials and lawmakers. While many Iraqis have welcomed the campaign, some remain skeptical about whether it will extend to the country’s most influential political figures.
