Dangote Refinery Denies Exporting and Re-Importing Fuel to Nigeria

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims that fuel produced at its facility is exported to neighbouring countries and later brought back into Nigeria for sale.

The refinery made the clarification in a statement shared on its official social media platforms on Wednesday, following reports that it prioritises exports over local fuel supply.

According to the company, such a practice would not make economic sense because it would involve additional costs, including shipping, storage, financing and handling expenses, before the products are returned to Nigeria.

The refinery stressed that Nigeria remains its largest market and that domestic demand is given priority. It explained that exports are limited to volumes not purchased by local marketers.

Dangote Refinery also questioned who would benefit from exporting fuel only to re-import it into the same market, noting that the process would add unnecessary costs without creating value.

The company reiterated its commitment to meeting Nigeria’s fuel needs, stating that exports are only carried out when there is excess supply after domestic demand has been addressed.
