Navy provides solar-powered borehole for Niger community

The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a 35,000-litre solar-powered borehole in Muye Community, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, to improve residents’ access to clean and safe drinking water.

The project, which includes an overhead water storage facility and a water distribution network, was delivered under the Chief of the Naval Staff’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Project programme. It was facilitated by the Commandant of the Nigerian Naval College, Rear Admiral Mohammed Adamu Muye.

Speaking during the inauguration, Rear Admiral Muye said the initiative reflects the Navy’s commitment to supporting communities beyond its core security responsibilities. He noted that improving access to basic amenities such as potable water contributes to better living conditions and strengthens the relationship between the military and civilians.

According to him, the intervention is part of a broader effort to complement government development programmes while addressing pressing social needs in local communities.

Muye explained that the Special Intervention Quick Impact Project, introduced by the Chief of the Naval Staff in 2024, enables senior naval officers to undertake projects that directly benefit their host communities and promote stronger civil-military cooperation.

He stressed that reliable access to clean water remains essential for public health, education, agriculture and economic activities, noting that many communities across Nigeria continue to face challenges in obtaining safe drinking water.

Residents are expected to benefit from a more dependable water supply, with the project aimed at improving daily living conditions and supporting sustainable community development.
