TotalEnergies has announced that its Mozambique LNG project is now 45% complete, with the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) production still expected to begin in 2029.

The French energy company provided the update during the presentation of its second-quarter 2026 financial results. Chief Executive Officer Patrick Pouyanné said construction has accelerated since work resumed at the Afungi site in Cabo Delgado Province in January.

He disclosed that between 7,000 and 8,000 workers are currently engaged on the project, reflecting increased construction activity.

Pouyanné said the project faced temporary logistical challenges due to the conflict in the Middle East, which delayed the shipment of equipment manufactured in Dubai and other locations in the region. He, however, noted that the supply issues have now been resolved and are no longer expected to affect the project’s schedule.

Despite the earlier disruptions, TotalEnergies maintained that the project remains on track to deliver its first LNG production in 2029.

The company also identified Mozambique as one of its key growth markets, alongside Suriname, Namibia and Malaysia, as it continues to expand its global energy portfolio.

The US$20 billion Mozambique LNG project, located in Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin, is expected to produce up to 13 million tonnes of LNG annually when it becomes operational. Construction resumed earlier this year after a four-year suspension caused by the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.

Mozambique is developing several LNG projects to commercialise its vast offshore natural gas reserves. The Coral Sul floating LNG project, operated by Eni, has been producing gas since 2022, while the Coral Norte project is expected to begin operations in 2028.

Another major development, the Rovuma LNG project led by ExxonMobil, is expected to start production after 2030, with a final investment decision anticipated later this year.
