The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has maintained its position as Europe’s biggest source of imported jet fuel, surpassing suppliers from the United States for the second month in a row.

Data from global commodities intelligence company, Kpler, showed that the Nigerian refinery shipped more than 400,000 tonnes of aviation fuel to European markets in July.

The volume represented about 20 per cent of the roughly 2.06 million tonnes of jet fuel imported by Europe during the month, making Dangote Refinery the continent’s largest single supplier.

The development comes after the refinery exported a record 466,000 tonnes of jet fuel to Europe in June, when it first overtook the United States as the leading supplier.

The latest figures highlight the refinery’s growing role in international petroleum product markets and its ability to supply aviation fuel that meets the quality requirements of major global markets.

European refiners and fuel buyers have historically sourced large volumes from the United States, the Middle East and Asia. However, the Dangote refinery’s location on Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline and its large-scale production capacity have strengthened its ability to compete in the European market.

Production at the 700,000-barrel-per-day facility has also continued to increase. Jet fuel shipments through the refinery’s Lekki terminal reportedly reached about 550,000 tonnes in June, while crude deliveries rose to a record 660,000 barrels per day.

Market disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions, including developments around the Strait of Hormuz, have also encouraged European buyers to broaden their supply options. Although Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman supplied some volumes in July, Dangote remained the largest individual source.

The refinery has also expanded its exports of other refined products, including diesel and gasoline, to markets across Europe, Africa and other regions.

Commenting on the refinery’s expanding international footprint, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, David Bird, said its growing exports were strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global refined petroleum products market.

The sustained demand from Europe marks another step in Dangote Refinery’s emergence as a major player in global fuel trade and reinforces Nigeria’s capacity to export higher-value refined petroleum products.
