Dangote Group has offered East African countries a 30 per cent stake in a proposed refinery to be built in the region.
Kenya’s President William Ruto’s economic adviser, David Ndii, disclosed this at a capital markets forum in Nairobi.
According to Ndii, Kenya could acquire a 10 per cent interest in the project for about $500 million. Ethiopia and Rwanda have also indicated interest in taking part in the investment.
The proposed ownership structure would allow participating East African countries to hold equity in the refinery while potentially strengthening regional access to locally refined petroleum products.
The project would also expand Dangote Group’s presence in Africa’s energy sector beyond Nigeria, where its major refinery in Lagos has become a significant source of refined petroleum products.
Details on the refinery’s exact location, construction timeline and total investment cost were not provided in the announcement.
