The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has directed petroleum tanker drivers to conclude all depot operations by 6:00 p.m. daily following growing security concerns along major highways.
The directive, issued through the union’s Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch, also prohibits members from entering depots after 5:00 p.m.
The decision followed a meeting held at Ibeto, where the Lagos Zonal leadership instructed tanker drivers to observe the revised operating hours.
NUPENG said the restrictions were introduced to protect drivers, their vehicles and petroleum products against increasing incidents of armed robbery and truck hijacking, particularly at night.
Under the arrangement, drivers are expected to complete loading and other depot-related activities before 6:00 p.m., while access to depots will be restricted from 5:00 p.m.
The union’s directive is expected to affect petroleum loading and distribution schedules, particularly in Lagos and neighbouring areas.
Depot operators, transport companies and other industry stakeholders have been urged to comply with the new operating guidelines.
The development comes amid concerns over the safety of petroleum transportation workers and the security of fuel supplies along the country’s major distribution routes.
