TotalEnergies Expands US Renewable Energy Investments as Developers Pull Back

French energy giant TotalEnergies is increasing its investment in the United States renewable energy market, taking advantage of opportunities created by developers reconsidering their projects amid declining government support.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Pouyanné, said on Monday that the US market remains attractive despite changes in policies expected to reduce incentives for wind and solar energy development.

Speaking during a briefing on the company’s energy outlook, Pouyanné explained that uncertainty surrounding the future of renewable energy incentives has prompted some developers to reconsider their investments, creating opportunities for TotalEnergies to acquire projects already under development.

He said the company had strengthened its focus on wind energy and was taking on additional projects as competitors became increasingly concerned about the market’s prospects.

A US tax law passed in 2025 accelerated the withdrawal of tax credits for wind and solar projects. Under the new rules, most projects must begin construction by July 2026 or become operational by the end of 2027 to qualify for the incentives.

The changes have encouraged developers to speed up project construction before the deadlines expire.

Pouyanné described the situation as an opportunity for the company, noting that TotalEnergies could acquire projects from developers unwilling to continue amid uncertainty over the market’s future.

He also disclosed that the company is spending slightly more than initially planned on its US renewable energy operations, partly because projects in the country are generally larger than those in Europe.

Despite concerns that the US renewable energy market could experience a slowdown between 2028 and 2030, TotalEnergies believes the current uncertainty presents opportunities to expand its portfolio and strengthen its position in the sector.
