Nigeria’s natural gas reserves have surged to an all-time high of 210.5 trillion cubic feet, enough to last the country 93 years, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Speaking on the new figures, NUPRC CEO Gbenga Komolafe said the growth aligns with the objectives of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, which mandates reserve expansion and sustained energy security.
“Our gas reserves now stand at 210.54 trillion cubic feet, with 101.03 TCF as associated gas and 109.51 TCF as non-associated gas,” Komolafe said.
“This is a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy journey.”In addition, Nigeria’s crude oil and condensate reserves are now 31.44 billion barrels and 5.84 billion barrels, respectively — a total of 37.28 billion barrels.
Experts say this boost could aid Nigeria in hitting its 2.06 million barrels per day production target, as the commission continues its push to attract investment and unlock more production through recent bid rounds.
Komolafe also reminded stakeholders of last year’s strategy aimed at raising oil output by 1 million barrels per day, adding that NUPRC has “opened up Nigeria for investment opportunities” in the upstream sector.
