The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has kicked off reconstruction work on three collapsed electricity transmission towers along the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line, which plunged parts of Kebbi and Kaduna states into darkness earlier this month.

TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, revealing that three contractors had been mobilised—each assigned to rebuild one of the towers.

“To mitigate the impact of the outage on Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) and its customers, alternative supply routes have been activated,” Mbah stated.

She added that the company adopted a multi-contractor strategy to “fast-track the reconstruction process and restore full transmission capacity as quickly as possible.”

According to her, some relief has already been provided to affected areas including Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi, which are now receiving between 6MW and 7MW of bulk power via the 132kV Mando-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi line from the Mando Transmission Substation.

“TCN appreciates the patience and understanding of the affected communities as contractors work assiduously alongside our supervising engineers to rebuild the towers,” Mbah said. “We regret the inconvenience caused and remain committed to restoring full supply as quickly as possible.”

Kaduna Electric also confirmed the tower collapse in a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulaziz Abdullahi, on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“We sincerely wish to apologise to our esteemed customers in Birnin Kebbi for the outage currently being experienced. The outage is due to the collapse of three transmission towers near Yauri town,” the statement read.

This incident marks another disruption in a series of power outages and system trips plaguing the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi corridor since 2024.

TCN reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining the integrity and reliability of Nigeria’s national grid.
