Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Power Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Nigeria’s power sector, vowing to make stable electricity supply a top national priority under his administration.

Speaking virtually at the commissioning of the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Oyigbo LGA of Rivers State on Wednesday, the President described the new facility as a symbol of progress and private-sector-driven development.

“Achieving stable power supply remains a top priority for this administration,” Tinubu said. “I have directed the Honourable Minister of Power and all stakeholders in the value chain to work collectively towards our declaration to light up Nigeria.”

The Afam II plant, completed in just 16 months, is a partnership between the Federal Government, Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendough Nigeria Limited.

The President said the project reinforces his Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at tackling Nigeria’s power challenges through collaboration, policy reform, and investment.

“This plant will energize homes, businesses, healthcare facilities, and industries. It reflects our determination to transform Nigeria’s economy with reliable power,” he added.

Sahara Power Group’s GMD, Kola Adesina, said the project is more than just additional megawatts.

“We’re celebrating impact and transformed lives. Electricity is the backbone of modern economies, and we are proud to be powering job creation, growth, and sustainable development,” Adesina noted.

He revealed that Sahara Power contributes over 20% of Nigeria’s generated electricity, powering more than 50 million people through operations such as Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, praised the Afam II project as proof of the benefits of public-private partnerships and sector reforms.

“This plant is a beacon of innovation and energy security made possible by reforms and private sector collaboration,” he said.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, assured continued cooperation between the gas and power ministries to ensure sustainable energy delivery.

Rivers State Sole Administrator, Rtd. Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, hailed the swift completion of the project and praised the Sahara Group’s belief in local solutions.

“You’ve shown that indigenous enterprise is not just alive, but thriving. Your investment affirms Rivers as a viable destination for high-impact ventures,” he said.

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms and promised more policies that will attract both local and foreign investment in the power sector.
