Former U.S. President Donald Trump is calling for urgent action to prevent a spike in oil prices following recent American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote in all caps: “Everyone, keep oil prices down, I’m watching! You’re playing into the hands of the enemy, don’t do it.” He later directed a message to the U.S. Department of Energy, urging them to boost domestic oil production: “Drill, baby, drill. I mean now.”
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright responded briefly on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We’re on it!” However, the department has not yet clarified what specific measures are being taken in response to Trump’s comments.
Oil prices showed some volatility on Monday. Brent crude, the global benchmark, hit a five-month high before falling by over 1% to $76.10 per barrel. Despite the recent military strikes, oil shipments from the Middle East have continued, helping to calm some of the market’s initial concerns.
Analysts say the U.S. could consider releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if supply disruptions worsen.
However, Trump has previously criticized the Biden administration for using the reserve after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
