OMT Launches Solar Water Project to Tackle Water Scarcity in Ogu Community

Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) has rolled out a new solar-powered water project aimed at addressing water shortages in Ogu, a community in Rivers State’s Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.

The initiative includes four solar water systems, each with a 4,000-litre capacity, and is part of OMT’s Safe Water Scheme, which began in 2023 to promote access to clean and safe water.

During the commissioning ceremony, OMT’s Managing Director, Nicolo Scannavini, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting its host communities through sustainable development efforts. He noted that the latest installations follow the successful deployment of three similar systems last year. Two of those earlier systems need upgrades, which the company has promised to carry out soon.

Scannavini also acknowledged the community’s contributions to OMT, pointing out that one of the company’s leading staff members comes from Ogu.

Community representatives expressed gratitude for the project. Chief Lawrence Inuma, secretary of the local council of chiefs, said the new water systems would ease daily struggles with water access and called for further support in youth employment to help reduce crime and promote progress.

Steve Davids, OMT’s liaison officer to the community, also praised the solar-powered systems, saying they offer a consistent water supply, even when electricity is unavailable.

OMT is a key logistics operator in the Onne Port Complex and serves as a vital hub for maritime trade in the Niger Delta and beyond.
