ExxonMobil Awards $1.1bn Contracts for Mozambique LNG Project

ExxonMobil and its partners in Mozambique’s Area 4 have awarded contracts worth about $1.1 billion to support the development of the Rovuma LNG project in Cabo Delgado.

The contracts cover engineering, procurement, fabrication and manufacturing of critical equipment for the planned gas project, which is targeting a final investment decision in 2026.

Rovuma LNG is expected to develop offshore gas resources in the Rovuma Basin and supply an onshore liquefaction facility with a planned capacity of 18.6 million tonnes per annum.

The largest contract was awarded to OneSubsea UK and OneSubsea AS for work on subsea production systems, controls and umbilicals. Aker Solutions Mozambique will provide in-country support.

Other contractors will supply valves, line pipes and specialised pipe systems required for the development. Advanced Technology Valve will handle large-bore production valves, while Corinth Pipeworks and Sumitomo Corporation of America will manufacture different categories of line pipes.

ExxonMobil said the early contracts would allow suppliers to begin manufacturing equipment with long delivery periods before the project reaches a final investment decision. The company said this approach would help keep the project on schedule and improve the availability of critical infrastructure.

The Area 4 partners are also continuing project planning and engineering activities ahead of the expected 2026 investment decision.

Earlier in August, ExxonMobil signed a letter of intent with a consortium comprising Saipem, McDermott Energy Solutions, Daewoo Engineering & Construction and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation for limited engineering and procurement services.

Rovuma LNG is planned to comprise 12 modular liquefaction units and is expected to become one of the largest private investments in Mozambique’s history.

The project is part of wider gas development in the Rovuma Basin, which has emerged as one of the world’s major natural gas regions.

In 2025, XRG, the international investment arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, acquired Galp Energia’s 10 per cent stake in the Area 4 concession, giving it exposure to Rovuma LNG as well as other LNG developments in the basin.
