Nigerian Senate Introduces Bill to Promote Electric Vehicles and Clean Energy

The Nigerian Senate has taken a key step toward transforming the country’s transportation sector by introducing a bill aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and embracing clean energy solutions.

Known as the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill, 2025 (SB 856), the legislation passed its first reading during a Senate session on Tuesday. The bill is sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North.

Senator Kalu said the bill is designed to provide a strong legal and policy framework to guide Nigeria’s shift to electric mobility. It also focuses on encouraging local production of EVs, creating employment opportunities, and supporting sustainable development.

According to details shared with the media, the bill is not just an environmental effort—it also aims to drive economic growth by supporting innovation and ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the global move toward cleaner transportation.

Some of the proposed measures include building a national network of electric vehicle charging stations, offering incentives for EV adoption by both individuals and organizations, and incorporating renewable energy into transport systems.

The bill is seen as a proactive effort to modernize Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, reduce emissions, and open up new opportunities in the green technology sector.
