The Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanne, has stated that Europe is on course to stop relying on Russian gas by 2028. According to him, ongoing liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the United States and Qatar will be able to fill the gap and ensure steady supply across the continent.
Pouyanne made this known during an interview with BFM Business, explaining that these new energy developments will make it possible for Europe to maintain energy security without Russian LNG by the 2028 target.
His remarks come as the European Union intensifies efforts to cut energy ties with Russia due to the prolonged war in Ukraine. While Russia is no longer the EU’s top gas supplier, it still provides nearly 20% of its gas needs.
TotalEnergies, which currently imports LNG from both the U.S. and Russia, is expected to gradually shift its sourcing as the new facilities become operational.
On fuel prices, Pouyanne said European and French consumers have little to worry about in the short term. He pointed out that supply remains strong, and Saudi Arabia is working to prevent any major price hikes.
However, he raised concerns over the broader global outlook, warning that increasing geopolitical tensions especially trade disputes linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump are fueling uncertainty that could slow down global economic growth.
