Oil Gas and Energy JournalOGE JOURNAL

A group of petroleum engineers, led by Riverson Oppong of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), has raised concerns over significant natural gas wastage in Nigeria.

Due to inadequate infrastructure, most of the country’s produced gas is wasted, while only a fraction is utilized.

Oppong, speaking at the Oilda Fireside Chat in Lagos, urged the Nigerian government to invest in advanced oil and gas technologies to reduce waste and drive cleaner energy initiatives.

He highlighted the example of Ghana’s efficient industry structure and stressed the importance of decarbonizing fossil fuels for Africa’s economic development.
