High Cost of Gas Cylinders Forcing Nigerians Back to Firewood — Oil Firm Warns

An oil and energy company has warned that Nigeria’s clean cooking goals may remain unattainable if the rising cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders is not tackled urgently.

Speaking at the NAEC summit in Lagos, the company’s Managing Director, Olumide Adeosun, said many households—particularly in rural areas—can no longer afford gas bottles, causing them to revert to firewood for cooking.

He explained that although Nigeria produces enough gas, access remains limited because people cannot afford the equipment needed to use it. “The problem is not gas supply but the inability of households to buy cylinders. Until we solve that, gas adoption will remain slow,” Adeosun said.

He commended local firms investing in cylinder production but stressed that more financial support is needed to make clean cooking affordable. He also suggested that government-backed starter kits, including cylinders and stoves, could help boost usage among low-income families.

Adeosun further called for policies requiring gas infrastructure in new housing estates to create consistent demand for LPG and CNG.

He warned that without better funding and last-mile distribution, Nigeria’s efforts to expand gas use and reduce dependence on firewood may fall short.
