FG Plans Solar Power Boost for Hospitals and Universities — ECN Boss

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its resolve to improve electricity supply in public hospitals and universities through large-scale investment in renewable energy solutions.

According to the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, the initiative falls under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Project, which is aimed at expanding clean energy access across public institutions.

Mustapha, who made the announcement while marking his two years in office, said the project’s first phase has already delivered two-megawatt solar hybrid systems to key institutions, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, General Hospital Bangi in Niger State, the Enugu Research Centre, and the University of Abuja.

He noted that the program has also reached communities in Benue, Kebbi, Kaduna, Ekiti, and Osun States, with additional universities and hospitals selected for the second rollout phase.

The ECN chief highlighted that the Commission has been instrumental in driving renewable energy adoption through multiple partnerships and agreements for solar mini-grid deployment, many of which are currently under development.

Mustapha further stated that the recently approved National Energy Policy and National Energy Master Plan were designed to streamline project coordination and attract private investment into the clean energy sector.

He added that the Commission has also established a pilot Green Hydrogen Plant to promote the domestication of green technologies and support Nigeria’s transition to a sustainable energy future.

According to him, these efforts underline the Federal Government’s long-term commitment to energy diversification, sustainable development, and enhanced power access in critical public service institutions.
