Komolafe Bags Professional Doctorate and Global Leadership Award

Engineer Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), has received a professional doctorate in leadership (Energy Law) from the International Business School of Scandinavia. He was also honored with the Global Sustainable Leadership Award at the G-SEL Conference 2025, held at the House of Lords in the United Kingdom.

The event, which brought together policymakers, business leaders, and diplomats from around the world, recognized Komolafe’s leadership in implementing reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and promoting Nigeria as a transparent and competitive destination for energy investments.

Since taking office, Komolafe has overseen significant growth in Nigeria’s upstream sector. The active rig count rose from eight in 2021 to over 40, with a total of 69 rigs as of October 2025. Revenue performance has also exceeded government targets, with the NUPRC recording surpluses of 18.3% in 2022, 14.6% in 2023, and 84.2% in 2024.

Beyond financial achievements, NUPRC has advanced host community development and increased indigenous participation. The Host Community Development Trust now stands at over N350 billion, funding projects that have helped stabilize previously volatile communities.

In his acceptance speech, Komolafe dedicated the awards to the Nigerian people, highlighting their resilience and the government’s commitment to reform. He emphasized that NUPRC’s strategy focuses on transparency, competitiveness, and sustainability while maximizing the value of Nigeria’s hydrocarbon resources and supporting the energy transition.

The G-SEL London Conference 2025, themed “The Intersection of Innovation, Sustainability, and Equity for Energy Access,” provided a platform for global dialogue on energy, education, and inclusive growth. Other award recipients included leaders from the United Nations, World Energy Council, and several African governments, recognizing their contributions to sustainable development and energy transition.

Komolafe’s recognition underscores Nigeria’s growing reputation as a credible and forward-looking energy hub in Africa, with a strong emphasis on regulatory integrity and global partnerships.
