Egypt Pushes for Unified Arab Emergency Oil and Gas Procurement

Egypt has introduced a set of five strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing energy security across Arab nations, including the creation of a unified mechanism for emergency oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases, the country’s petroleum ministry announced on Sunday.

The proposals were presented by Egyptian Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi at a ministerial meeting of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) in Kuwait. Among the key initiatives is the development of an Arab energy interconnection map, designed to improve regional coordination and infrastructure for energy supply.

In addition, Badawi suggested establishing a digital investment platform that would span upstream, downstream, and renewable energy projects. The platform is intended to attract investments and facilitate collaboration on energy initiatives across member states.

“These measures are designed to strengthen the region’s resilience to supply shocks and ensure coordinated responses during energy emergencies,” the ministry stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among Arab nations to safeguard energy security.

The proposals come amid global energy market uncertainties, as many Arab countries seek to leverage collective resources to stabilize supply and mitigate the impact of fluctuating international energy prices. The suggested emergency procurement system and investment platform are expected to be discussed further in upcoming OAPEC meetings.
