China Increases LNG Imports from Russia by 18% in 2025

In 2025, China’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia rose by 18.2%, reaching 9.79 million tons, according to China’s General Customs Administration. The value of these imports stayed steady at $4.98 billion, keeping Russia in third place among China’s LNG suppliers.

Australia remained China’s top LNG exporter despite a 22.1% drop in shipments to 20.38 million tons, while Qatar followed with 19.43 million tons, up 6%. Malaysia delivered 7.21 million tons and Indonesia 4.01 million tons. The United States supplied 259,950 tons, ranking 13th, as it did not export LNG to China from March to December 2025.

In December alone, Russian LNG shipments to China increased 17.7% compared to November, totaling 1.9 million tons, with a value rise of 11.3% to $819.3 million.

Overall, China imported 76.64 million tons of LNG in 2024, an 8% increase over 2023, while Russian shipments grew 3.3% to 8.28 million tons.
