Retail fuel prices at MRS filling stations, supported by the Dangote Refinery, have jumped in Abuja, with Premium Motor Spirit now selling for N875 per liter, up from N839 per liter.
An MRS station manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the price adjustment on Friday.
The increase of N36 per liter comes despite Dangote Refinery recently lowering its petrol gantry price from N799 to N744 per liter, a move intended to undercut imported fuel.
The hike at MRS outlets has effectively erased the previous price advantage the stations had over competitors such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Current fuel prices in Abuja now range from N875 to N889 per liter.
The 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery, which recently reached full operational capacity, had hoped the lower gantry price would make its petrol more competitive. However, the latest retail price adjustment suggests the move has had little immediate effect on the cost for consumers.
