The Republic of Togo is looking to boost the amount of electricity it imports from Nigeria through the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), as the country works to meet growing energy needs and expand access to electricity for new consumers.
The request came during a strategic meeting between NDPHC officials and a delegation from Togo’s national electricity company, Compagnie Énergie Électrique du Togo (C.E.E.T.), led by Director-General Débo-K’mba Barandao. The discussions focused on strengthening existing collaboration and exploring ways to increase cross-border power trade.
Currently, C.E.E.T. imports around 75 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity from NDPHC. This supply has helped Togo maintain stable electricity delivery for households, businesses, and public institutions, while supporting economic activities.
Barandao praised NDPHC for its consistent power supply and highlighted the benefits of the partnership, noting that it has strengthened regional energy cooperation in West Africa. He also said Togo’s electricity demand is rising due to new industrial and commercial connections, as well as government initiatives to broaden national electricity access.
In response, NDPHC Managing Director Jennifer Adighije reaffirmed the company’s readiness to expand cooperation with Togo.
She emphasized that the company has the capacity to support regional electricity supply through its power plants under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) and is committed to advancing energy integration across West Africa.
Adighije also stressed the importance of establishing sustainable commercial arrangements, including reliable payment frameworks, to ensure the long-term viability of cross-border electricity trade.
Both parties described the meeting as productive and committed to ongoing discussions to create workable mechanisms for increasing electricity exports to Togo. Analysts say this initiative reflects a broader push among West African nations to strengthen regional electricity trade and maximize existing generation capacity to tackle persistent power shortages.
If successfully implemented, an increased electricity supply from Nigeria is expected to enhance Togo’s energy security, improve access for newly connected customers, and further boost regional economic development.
