Nigeria Leads Africa’s Oil Production in 2025

Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s largest crude oil producer in 2025, averaging about 1.61 million barrels per day, according to newly released data.

Libya followed as the second-highest producer on the continent, recording roughly 1.36 million barrels daily. Algeria and Angola also maintained strong output levels, producing 1.14 million and 1.03 million barrels per day respectively.

Egypt ranked among the top five producers, contributing approximately 0.51 million barrels per day, reinforcing its role as a steady player in North Africa’s oil sector.

Among smaller producers, the Republic of the Congo and Gabon each delivered around 0.24 million barrels per day. Ghana’s output stood at about 0.18 million barrels daily, while Chad rounded out the list with 0.13 million barrels per day.

The figures highlight the continued importance of crude oil to many African economies, especially across West and North Africa where production remains a key source of revenue.

However, output levels differ widely between countries, largely influenced by factors such as infrastructure development, investment flows, and political conditions.

On the global stage, the United States continues to dominate oil production, with an output of about 13.58 million barrels per day far exceeding the combined totals of individual African producers.
